This week we deeply explore the profound meaning of Good Friday, drawing from all four gospels. We begin by contemplating what this day required of Jesus, the Creator and Saviour, so that we might experience His amazing love and wonderful hope. The message recounts Jesus’s final hours, starting with his humble act of washing his disciples’ feet and revealing the impending betrayal by Judas. We then move to the Last Supper, where Jesus established the new covenant through bread and wine, and gave the new commandment to love one another. The sermon follows Jesus to the Mount of Olives and Gethsemane, detailing his anguish, his prayer for God’s will to be done, and his subsequent betrayal and arrest. We then consider Jesus’s unjust trials before Annas, Caiaphas, Pilate, and Herod, alongside Peter’s denial. The message covers Judas’s remorse and the purchase of the potter’s field. It describes Jesus’s suffering as he was mocked by soldiers and the crowd chose Barabbas over him, leading to his flogging and journey to the cross. We reflect on his words from the cross, the division of his garments, and the miraculous events that occurred at his death, including the tearing of the temple curtain, the earthquake, and the opening of tombs. Finally, we reflect on his burial by Joseph of Arimathea, emphasising that Jesus’s suffering and death were the ultimate act of love, a singular sacrifice that reverses the curse of sin, bringing freedom, hope, and eternal life.
